I am not sure I want to proceed with anything yet. Can I still come in?

Yes — that is exactly what the Quiet Consultation is for. The appointment is a conversation, not a commitment. You are free to leave it at that. No documents are filed and no further contact is made unless you request it.

How long does a separation matter typically take?

Most separation matters the office handles run between five and twelve months. The timeline depends on what needs to be resolved, how both parties approach discussions, and whether any court orders are required. You are able to pause the matter at any point if you need time to consider your position.

What is the difference between mediation and going to court?

Mediation is a structured conversation, guided by a neutral mediator, where both parties work toward an arrangement they can both accept. It is generally faster, less costly, and less wearing than contested court proceedings. The office can prepare you beforehand, attend where it is permitted, and put the outcome into a properly drafted agreement.

Will my situation remain private?

Confidentiality is a core obligation for legal practitioners in Malaysia, not simply a preference of this office. What you share in a consultation or during a matter remains between you and the office. The only exceptions are situations where disclosure is required by law, which the office will explain to you if they apply.

Do I need to bring anything to a first meeting?

You do not need to bring anything unless you feel it would help you describe your situation. A MyKad or passport is helpful for identification purposes. If there are documents you think are relevant — a marriage certificate, a property title, a bank statement — feel free to bring copies, but it is not a requirement for the first appointment.

What are the fees and how are they charged?

A Quiet Consultation is RM 145, which covers a single appointment and a written note of what was discussed. Mediation support begins at RM 320. Ongoing separation matters begin at RM 635. The office will outline what is included and any additional costs before any work is undertaken, so there are no unexpected amounts.
